Origin from 1964
The 1964 Zanzibar Revolution, which overthrew the Sultan of Zanzibar and led to violence against and flight of the island's Arab and South Asian minorities, forced the relocation of the Shri Zanzibar Katcchi Jain Temple's original 1905 murtis to Nairobi, Kenya. The temple building itself survived on the island, later renovated, but its founding images and, with them, the practising community that had made Zanzibar a first foothold for Jainism outside India, moved on to Kenya.

How Zanzibar's Revolution Displaced Its Jain Temple

The Zanzibar Revolution of 1964 overthrew the Sultan of Zanzibar and set off violence against, and flight among, the island's Arab and South Asian minorities in the weeks that followed. Among those forced to move were the founding murtis of the Shri Zanzibar Katcchi Jain Temple, the sacred images consecrated there in 1905, relocated in the upheaval to Nairobi, Kenya, a country the same Indian Ocean trading networks had already connected to Zanzibar for decades.
The temple building itself remained standing on Zanzibar and was later renovated, but its founding images did not return with it. What left the island in 1964 was not only a set of consecrated images but the practising community that had gathered around them, the same Kutchi Jain trading families who had made Zanzibar Jainism's first documented foothold outside India less than six decades earlier.
What this changed for Jainism's spread was the movement of that foothold's living centre from Zanzibar to Kenya, a relocation forced by political upheaval rather than any decline in the community's own religious life, leaving the original temple building on the island standing as a monument to a community that had, by 1964, already moved on.
