Origin from 1722

Beginning in 1722, refugees from the Hidden Seed communities in Moravia arrived on Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf's Saxon estate and founded the settlement of Herrnhut; the community formalized its Brotherly Agreement on 12 May 1727 and experienced a spiritual renewal on 13 August 1727 that Moravians count as their church's true re-founding, a century after the White Mountain suppression had driven the Brethren underground.

How Zinzendorf's Herrnhut Refounded the Moravian Church

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Beginning in 1722, refugees from the Hidden Seed communities that had survived a century of underground existence in Moravia began arriving on Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf's estate in Saxony, where they founded the settlement of Herrnhut. Zinzendorf, a Lutheran nobleman, gave the refugees land to settle on, and the community they built there grew steadily as more Hidden Seed families made the same journey out of Moravia over the following years.

The settlers formalized their communal life on 12 May 1727, adopting the Brotherly Agreement that set out how Herrnhut's mixed population, Hidden Seed Moravians alongside other Protestant refugees Zinzendorf had also taken in, would govern itself. Three months later, on 13 August 1727, the community experienced a spiritual renewal during a communion service that Moravians ever since have counted as their church's true re-founding, the moment the Hidden Seed's hidden faith became an organized body again rather than a memory carried by scattered families.

What happened at Herrnhut changed the Brethren's spread completely: a century after White Mountain had driven the movement underground and split it between a Polish exile and a hidden Moravian remnant, the two strands met on Zinzendorf's estate and produced a renewed church with the base and the stability it needed to send out the missionaries who would carry the Moravian name to the Caribbean, Greenland and North America within the following two decades.
