This is the study the 1986 communique was written to make possible, and the reason the ganzfeld argument did not simply end there is instructive. Automating the procedure removed the specific loopholes both sides had agreed to close, and the effect did not disappear. Critics then raised objections the communique had not anticipated, concerning the acoustic isolation of the two rooms and the fact that the same small group ran every series. The participant figure given here is the one the investigators reported. The laboratory closed in 1989 when its funding ended, and Honorton died three years later, so the series was never extended by the person who designed it.

Charles Honorton and Daryl Bem reported the Autoganzfeld series, eleven series comprising 240 participants, in their jointly authored 1994 paper Does Psi Exist? Replicable Evidence for an Anomalous Process of Information Transfer, with a reported hit rate of about 32 percent against a chance expectation of 25 percent. The sample size and hit rate recorded here are the investigators' own figures from that publication, not independently re-derived, and the method was a forced-choice free-response protocol in which a sensory-deprived receiver attempted to identify a target image or film clip selected from a pool. What is in dispute is not whether Honorton and Bem reported these numbers but whether they replicate: independent laboratories outside the Honorton group have not reproduced a hit rate departing from chance at a comparable size, which is why the sample-size figure is recorded as debated even though the number itself is not alleged to be miscounted.

Julie Milton and Richard Wiseman's earlier 1999 meta-analysis, working from a differently defined set of thirty later studies, had found no effect. The method on both sides is meta-analysis of the post-1994 ganzfeld literature, and the disagreement is over which individual studies belong in the pool and how the noise-reduction model Storm and colleagues apply should be weighted, a dispute about inclusion criteria rather than about any single experiment's raw data. Independent of that argument, no laboratory outside the original Honorton group has reproduced the Autoganzfeld series itself at its original reported size, so the replication status is recorded as debated on the wider pooled literature while the original series remains unreplicated in its own right.

Building the Experiment the Communique Described

Honorton's laboratory in Princeton rebuilt the ganzfeld as a machine. A computer selected the target from the pool using a hardware source rather than a person or a table of numbers, controlled the playback to the sender, timed the session, presented the four candidate images to the receiver in a randomised order at the end, and recorded the judgement, so that no human being involved in a session knew the target while the session was running. The two rooms were separately shielded and separated, with the sender's room isolated so that no sound could pass. Each of these features answers a specific line in the 1986 document.

The reported outcome across eleven series and 240 participants was a hit rate of roughly thirty-two percent where twenty-five was expected, which is a small effect by the standards of a laboratory demonstration and a large one by the standards of this literature. It was presented to mainstream psychology in Psychological Bulletin in 1994, in a paper co-authored with Daryl Bem, in language deliberately pitched at readers with no prior interest in the subject. One detail of the automation is easy to miss and mattered a great deal to the argument. Because the computer selected and presented the four candidate images at the judging stage, the order in which they appeared was randomised too, which closed a route by which an experimenter's unconscious preference could favour the target.

Why It Did Not End the Argument

Three things kept the dispute open. The first is that automation closes the loopholes it was designed to close and no others; critics raised the acoustic isolation of the two rooms, and specifically whether a video target with a soundtrack could be faintly audible, which the 1986 list had not anticipated in that form. The second is that every series came from one laboratory, run by the person whose hypothesis was being tested, and the field's own literature on experimenter effects makes that hard to wave away. The third and most consequential is what happened next. Milton and Wiseman pooled thirty ganzfeld studies conducted after this series and found no significant overall effect, which is the outcome one expects if the original result was specific to its laboratory. Storm, Tressoldi and Di Risio later pooled free-response studies from 1992 to 2008 and found a significant effect, using a wider inclusion rule. Neither team accepts the other's pool. The laboratory itself closed in 1989 when funding ran out, and Honorton died in 1992, so nobody could simply run the series again under his supervision and see. The result stands as reported, unreplicated by an independent group, and unexplained.

Why this is disputed. Charles Honorton built the autoganzfeld series specifically to satisfy the automation, randomization and reporting standards his own 1986 joint communique with skeptic Ray Hyman had set out as conditions for a fair test. Honorton's later analysis reported the automated series still found an effect consistent with the earlier ganzfeld results, while Hyman continued to argue methodological flaws remained; later independent meta-analyses have split the same way, some reporting a significant combined effect and others reporting no significant effect once later, non-replicating studies were included.

Does the ganzfeld effect survive a pre-registered multi-laboratory replication meeting the standard set in the 1986 Hyman-Honorton communique?

Hyman and Honorton wrote down, jointly and in advance, what a decisive ganzfeld study would look like. No series run since has been accepted by both sides as meeting it. Two later meta-analyses, Milton and Wiseman in 1999 and Storm, Tressoldi and Di Risio in 2010, reach opposite conclusions on differently defined study pools, so the accumulated literature cannot settle it either.
