The Osteology of Sacrifice at Chichen Itza

More than a century of work on the human remains from the Sacred Cenote at Chichen Itza and from a chultun found beside it in 1967. The sequence runs from an early dredging that was closer to treasure hunting than to excavation, through modern taphonomic analysis, to whole-genome sequencing. Its importance here is that it is the clearest case in Mesoamerica where a popular claim about who was sacrificed has been tested directly against the bodies.

Edward Thompson dredged the Sacred Cenote at Chichen Itza from 1904 to 1910, recovering human remains that became the physical basis for the popular account of virgin girls sacrificed to the rain god Chaac. Vera Tiesler and Andrea Cucina's edited volume New Perspectives on Human Sacrifice and Ritual Body Treatments in Ancient Maya Society (2007), together with Guillermo de Anda's later taphonomic study of the cenote material, tested that account directly against the osteological remains and found it unsupported: the recovered material is dominated by subadults and includes adult males as well as adult females, not the exclusively young female profile the account requires. Rodrigo Barquera and colleagues' 2024 ancient-genome study, examining sixty-four children recovered from a separate chultun beside rather than part of the cenote itself, found all sixty-four were male, including two pairs of identical twins. The method is osteological sexing and, in the 2024 study, ancient DNA sequencing, applied directly to the skeletal remains rather than inferred from colonial-era narrative. Because the chultun and the cenote are separate deposits, the genomic result is direct evidence only about the chultun's own selection pattern and indirect evidence at most about the different story told of the cenote, which the earlier osteological work had already found unsupported.

This limits what the cenote material can ever answer. Questions that depend on knowing what lay with what, or at what depth, cannot now be put to it. The loss is a fact about the excavation rather than about Maya practice.

From Dredging to Genomes

The Sacred Cenote at Chichen Itza is a natural sinkhole about sixty metres across, north of the main pyramid at the end of a raised causeway. Between 1904 and 1910 Edward H. Thompson, an American consul who had bought the land, dredged it with a bucket and later went down himself in a diving suit. He brought up gold, jade, copal, worked wood and human bone, and he shipped much of it out of the country, which became a legal dispute in its own right.

By modern standards the dredging destroyed as much as it recovered. Position within the deposit was not recorded, so the material arrived in museums as a heap rather than as a stratified assemblage, and questions that depend on knowing what lay with what can no longer be asked of it. Later expeditions in the 1960s worked the cenote again with better method, and it was in 1967 that a chultun, a bottle-shaped subterranean chamber, was found nearby, containing the scattered remains of more than a hundred children.

The analytical work is much more recent than the recovery. Taphonomic study of the cenote remains, published in the 2007 volume edited by Vera Tiesler and Andrea Cucina, examined cut marks and body treatment on the surviving material. In 2024 a team led by Rodrigo Barquera sequenced whole genomes from 64 of the children in the chultun and published the result in Nature. A deposit dug up as treasure a century ago has become, by way of methods nobody then imagined, a testable body of evidence.

The Maiden in the Well

The claim that the Sacred Cenote received young virgin women is one of the most durable stories told about the Maya. It does not come from the Maya. It comes from sixteenth-century Spanish description, and it was fixed in the English-speaking imagination by early twentieth-century popular writing and by the exhibition of the dredged material as the treasure of a well of sacrifice.

It has now been tested against bodies, and it fails. The human material recovered from the cenote is dominated by subadults and contains adult males as well as adult females; it is not a population of young women. In 2024 the genomic study of the chultun beside the cenote went further: all 64 children sampled were male, and two pairs among them were identical twins, which points at deliberate selection rather than at whoever was to hand.

Precision matters here, and the popular reporting of the 2024 result mostly lost it. The chultun and the cenote are two separate deposits. The genomic finding of 64 boys is a finding about the chultun. What it does to the cenote story is indirect but real: the one place at Chichen Itza where the sex of the sacrificed can now be read off directly turns out to be entirely male, in a site whose reputation rests on the opposite claim.

The wider point is the one worth keeping. A claim about who was sacrificed was in circulation for four centuries without anyone testing it, and when it was tested it turned out to be a projection of the people telling it.
