Woody perennials whose meaning is carried by the standing tree and by what it yields: wood, bark, resin, leaf or fruit. Trees earn a shelf of their own because a tree is often a place as well as a plant. It can be planted, dedicated, sworn beside and venerated where it stands, and it outlives the people who marked it, which none of the other groupings here can support. Resin and timber bearing species such as Frankincense, Myrrh, Sandalwood and Cedar also appear under Incense.
