Tools used to seek knowledge of the future or of hidden causes: cast, read or otherwise consulted for guidance, rather than used in worship of a deity directly. Divination sits in an uneasy position across traditions, sanctioned as a formal practice in some and treated as marginal or forbidden in others, sometimes within the same tradition at different periods.
