Ritual Instruments

Instruments played, sounded or rung specifically to mark, accompany or punctuate a rite, from a shofar's blast to a temple bell or a full gamelan ensemble, distinguished from Ritual Implements by being handled for sound rather than for a physical operation on another object or substance. This is the largest subcategory in Sacred Objects, Dress and Symbols, spanning Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, West African, Aboriginal Australian and Zimbabwean practice.
