Initiatory institutions indigenous to West African societies, predating colonial contact and continuing today as living closed practices rather than as historical curiosities. All four have no single named founder in the record, only a people and a region, and none is reconstructed or explained here beyond what a grouping page can say without disclosing closed material. Poro and Sande in particular are paired institutions for men and women within the same communities.
