Western Asia

The Near East and Egypt

Western Asia, also called West Asia or Southwest Asia, is the westernmost region of Asia. As most academics and United Nations bodies define it, the subregion consists of Anatolia, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Mesopotamia, the Armenian highlands, the Levant, the Sinai Peninsula and the South Caucasus. It is separated from Africa by the Isthmus of Suez in Egypt and from Europe by the Turkish Straits and the watershed of the Greater Caucasus, and twelve seas surround it, among them the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. It covers about six million square kilometres and contains most of the similarly defined Middle East. This atlas uses it as the broad region for traditions and sites of the wider area.
