From the Bhakti Movement to a Global Practice

Kirtan and the closely related practice of sankirtan, group chanting of divine names, spread widely as part of the bhakti movements that reshaped Hindu devotional life from roughly the twelfth century onward, movements that generally emphasized direct, emotionally engaged devotion to a personal deity over ritual formality or scholastic philosophy, and that often deliberately used vernacular languages and accessible communal singing rather than Sanskrit and specialist ritual to reach the widest possible following.

Figures associated with this devotional wave, among them Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Bengal and poet saints such as Mirabai and Kabir elsewhere in India, are closely linked in popular memory with public, ecstatic group singing as a form of devotion in its own right, spreading the practice well beyond any single regional or sectarian following. Bhajan, devotional song more broadly, and kirtan overlap considerably in practice, with the distinction often resting on kirtan's emphasis on repetition and congregational response rather than on a fixed composed song performed for listeners.

In the twentieth century, movements built around Krishna devotion carried kirtan and sankirtan chanting of divine names outside India entirely, introducing the practice, often stripped of its wider theological context, to audiences with no prior exposure to Hindu devotional tradition, which is part of why kirtan is documented here separately from the specifically Sikh tradition of shabad kirtan that shares its name.
