The Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix is named for Gate 20 and Gate 34, which are in fact two of the four Integration gates, directly connected in the channel of Charisma, so its exposed half is a live connection rather than two separate pressures. Human Design reads Gate 20, from Hexagram 20, Contemplation, sitting in the Throat, as awareness and expression that occur now rather than in reflection; and Gate 34, from Hexagram 34, Great Power, sitting in the Sacral centre, as pure power, most potent simply being itself. It belongs to the Right Angle family, the largest of the system's three, read as a personal destiny that answers mainly to the individual's own choices.
Its design half is Gate 55 and Gate 59. Gate 55 sits in the Solar Plexus and is read as an emotional weather swinging between melancholy and abundance; it pairs with Gate 39 in the channel of Emoting. Gate 59 sits in the Sacral centre and is read as the energy that breaks down barriers between people; it pairs with Gate 6 in the channel of Mating.
So a chart carrying this cross speaks and acts now on a directly connected surface, while beneath it an unnamed mood answers to a barrier dissolving urge. The same four gates also underlie two further arrangements, and this cross's own reversal, under the opposite ordering, is the Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping four of them into one personal cross is the modern system's own construction, dated to 1987.
