A Model Built for Assessment

The Riso Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator, developed by Hudson together with Riso, translates their clinically detailed nine type framework, levels of development, wings, triads and Hornevian groups included, into a standardized written questionnaire a reader can complete without a teacher's direct guidance. Earlier transmission of the Enneagram had depended heavily on oral teaching or a trained practitioner's individual judgment to identify a person's type; a self report instrument of this kind makes the system usable at the scale of workplace training, coaching programs and popular publishing, well past the small group settings in which Claudio Naranjo had originally taught it in the 1970s.

Building a reliable self assessment for a system this layered required decisions a purely oral teaching had never needed to make explicit: which behavioral statements distinguish one type from its neighbors under stress, how to phrase items so a respondent's own self image does not simply produce the answer they already believe about themselves, and how to validate the result against expert judgment. The instrument's design work, carried out alongside the Institute Hudson and Riso founded to teach and certify practitioners, is itself part of what shifted the modern Enneagram from a teacher transmitted practice toward a published, standardized framework that a newcomer can now enter through a questionnaire before ever meeting a teacher at all.
