Lyra, the Lyre, a small brilliant northern constellation associated with the sign Sagittarius, dominated by dazzling blue-white Vega, one of the brightest stars in the sky and a corner of the Summer Triangle. It is the lyre of Orpheus, the divine musician whose playing charmed all nature and who descended to the underworld to reclaim Eurydice; after his death the instrument was set in the heavens. Astrologically Lyra confers harmony, artistic and musical gifts, refinement, and grace.

The First Star Ever Photographed

Lyra's own article already gives Vega its due as a former and future pole star and the anchor of the Summer Triangle. Its more quietly important role came a full century before any of that language of precession was common knowledge to the public: Vega was the first star other than the Sun ever captured on camera.

In 1850, the American astronomer John Adams Whipple photographed Vega through the telescope at the Harvard College Observatory, producing what is generally credited as the first successful photograph of a star, at a time when photographic technology was barely a decade old and stellar photography was considered close to impossible given how faint even a bright star's light is compared to a daylight scene. Vega's brightness made it a natural first target, and the success helped establish photography as a serious tool for astronomy rather than only for portraits and landscapes.

Vega went on to serve a second, related role: for much of the twentieth century its brightness was used informally as something close to a zero point for the star magnitude scale, a reference other stars were measured against, a purely technical distinction with nothing to do with Orpheus's lyre or the myth that gives the constellation its shape.

A star already carrying the mythic weight of a musician's instrument became, quite separately, one of the first fixed points the young science of astrophotography learned to trust.

Lyra is a small but brilliant northern constellation, one of Ptolemy's forty-eight, representing the lyre of Orpheus, the musician of Greek myth whose playing could charm all living things and even the lords of the underworld. It is dominated by Vega, one of the brightest stars in the sky and, through precession, a former and future pole star. Vega forms one corner of the great Summer Triangle with Deneb and Altair. Lyra also holds the famous Ring Nebula, a glowing shell of gas cast off by a dying star. In astronomical tradition the constellation is a pattern of stars rather than a zodiac sign. These are the features of Lyra as the classical and modern traditions describe it, distinct from any astrological reading; despite its small size it is among the most celebrated of the summer constellations.

Immediately beside Lyra, Hevelius placed Vulpecula, the little fox, in his 1687 catalogue, one of several faint seventeenth-century constellations tucked into the gaps of the rich summer Milky Way that Ptolemy's forty-eight, composed for observers without any special mapping ambition beyond the brightest and most storied figures, had left unnamed. Vega has functioned as the effective zero point for the modern magnitude scale in much amateur and some professional practice, its brightness long used as a calibration standard against which other stars are measured, a role quite separate from anything in its old mythological association with Orpheus.
