Nichiren Shoshu is the school of Nichiren Buddhism that traces itself to Nikko, one of Nichiren's six senior disciples, and holds its head temple at Taisekiji at the foot of Mount Fuji. It differs from the other Nichiren schools in treating Nichiren himself as the true Buddha of this age rather than as a teacher pointing to Shakyamuni, and in the authority it gives to the Dai-Gohonzon kept at Taisekiji. It is a priest-led body with a comparatively small temple membership.

Nikko, Taisekiji, and the Claim of Sole Transmission

Nichiren named six senior disciples before his death in 1282 and arranged for them to take turns tending his grave at Mount Minobu. Within a few years Nikko had left, and the accounts of why differ: the Nikko lineage holds that the lay steward of the area and the other disciples had begun to accommodate practices Nichiren rejected, while other Nichiren schools read the departure differently. Nikko founded Taisekiji at the foot of Mount Fuji in 1290, and that temple is the head temple of Nichiren Shoshu today.

The school holds that Nichiren transferred the entirety of his teaching to Nikko alone, and it points to two documents of transfer as evidence. Other Nichiren schools dispute the authenticity of those documents, and the question is therefore both a historical one about thirteenth century manuscripts and a live institutional one about who stands in the line.

Two doctrinal positions follow from the claim. The first is that Nichiren is the true Buddha of this age, the original Buddha whom Shakyamuni was preparing the world for, rather than a teacher who pointed towards Shakyamuni. The second is the unique standing of the Dai-Gohonzon, an object of devotion kept at Taisekiji and held to have been inscribed by Nichiren for all humanity. Together these make the school a priestly institution with something at its centre that exists nowhere else.

The Lay Movement, and the Separation of 1991

For most of the twentieth century the school was known abroad through a lay organisation rather than through its own priesthood. Soka Gakkai was founded in 1930 as a society of educators affiliated with Nichiren Shoshu, was suppressed during the war, and after 1945 grew into one of the largest religious movements in Japan through a vigorous programme of household conversion. Its members were formally lay believers of Nichiren Shoshu, and the temple provided the priests, the ordinations and the objects of devotion.

The relationship broke down at the end of the 1980s over authority: what a lay organisation may do without priestly sanction, how the teaching may be presented, and where the leadership of the movement lies. In 1991 the priesthood terminated the affiliation and the members of the lay organisation were excommunicated as a body. Each side has published its own account, and the atlas records that the two accounts differ rather than choosing between them.

The consequences were structural. Soka Gakkai continued as an independent lay Buddhist movement with millions of members and now confers its own object of devotion. Nichiren Shoshu retained its temples, its priesthood and its head temple, and a considerably smaller membership, which it has since rebuilt through its own lay associations. Neither is the whole of Nichiren Buddhism, which also includes the larger Nichiren Shu and other schools with their own head temples.
