Austrian occultist, journalist and self styled runologist who in 1902, recovering from cataract surgery, devised the eighteen Armanen runes that the atlas catalogues in full as the ArmanenRune type. He published them as Das Geheimnis der Runen (The Secret of the Runes) in 1908 and stands as the founding figure of Ariosophy, the völkisch mystical current that later fed into Nazi era esotericism.

From Leather Goods to Ariosophy

Guido Karl Anton List was born in Vienna on 5 October 1848, the son of a leather goods merchant, and worked for years in the family trade while building a parallel career as a journalist, novelist, dramatist and enthusiastic mountaineer and hiker in the Alps. His writing turned increasingly toward a romanticized, invented vision of pre-Christian Germanic religion, drawing on the Eddas, on contemporary völkisch nationalism and on his own reading of Theosophy, and by the 1890s he had a following that treated him as a recoverer of lost Germanic wisdom rather than as a novelist and journalist by trade.

In 1902 he underwent cataract surgery on both eyes and, during the temporary blindness that followed, reported a visionary experience in which the runes he later called Armanen were revealed to him as a wisdom the Germanic peoples had once possessed and then lost. He founded a following organized around this material, the Guido von List Society, before his death in Berlin on 17 May 1919. Before his turn to esotericism he had already built a substantial public reputation through conventional means, publishing novels and plays set in a romanticized pre-Christian Austria and writing travel pieces on the Alps for the Viennese press, so his later following came to him already primed by years of popular, if not academic, visibility rather than arriving from nowhere.

The Armanen Runes and Das Geheimnis der Runen

List set out his eighteen runes in Das Geheimnis der Runen (The Secret of the Runes), serialized in 1906 and published as a standalone book in 1908. Each of the eighteen is paired with a sound value and, in List's presentation, a mystical meaning he read as ancestral Germanic knowledge; several of the eighteen are visibly adapted from letters of the historical Elder Futhark, the runic alphabet actually used by early Germanic peoples, while others are List's own invention presented as recovered rather than devised.

Modern runology and the history of esotericism treat the Armanen runes as a modern construction rather than an authentic ancient system, and List himself as the founder of Ariosophy, the current of völkisch occultism that combined runic and Theosophical material with racial ideology. That current, developed further by later writers, fed directly into the esoteric fringe of National Socialism after List's own death, a legacy scholarship on the period treats as central to understanding him rather than incidental to it. List presented the eighteen runes as keyed to a corresponding eighteen verse poem in the Old Norse Havamal, reading a medieval Icelandic text as if it independently confirmed a system he had in fact just composed, a circular method of argument later scholarship has treated as characteristic of his approach generally rather than as an isolated lapse.
