Left Angle Cross of the Alpha (31/41)

The Left Angle Cross of the Alpha is named for Gate 31 and Gate 41. Human Design reads Gate 31, from Hexagram 31, Influence, sitting in the Throat, as leadership through influence, the voice others elect to follow because they recognise something in it, not because it commands; and Gate 41, from Hexagram 41, Decrease, sitting in the Root, as fantasy and anticipation, the pressure of feeling that starts a new cycle before there is anything yet to experience. It falls in the Left Angle family, which practitioners read as fated in flavour, serving something beyond the individual rather than a self chosen plan.

Its design half is Gate 24 and Gate 44. Gate 24 sits in the Ajna and is read as a mind circling the same thought repeatedly until it finally resolves; it pairs with Gate 61 in the channel of Awareness. Gate 44 sits in the Spleen and is read as an instinctive memory for people and patterns, a nose for who can be relied on; it pairs with Gate 26 in the channel of Surrender.

So a chart carrying this cross leads by election while anticipating what has not yet arrived on its surface, while beneath it a returning mind answers to an instinctive assessment of trust. The same pair also underlies the Cross of Fantasy and the Cross of Influence, and this cross's own reversal is the Left Angle Cross of the Alpha. The numbers are inherited from the I Ching; reading them as one cross belongs to the modern reading, not the classical one.

What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 31, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Gate 41, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Behind them, Gate 24 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind, and Gate 44 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding.

So the elected voice and the anticipated cycle the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of form and transformation, while the returning mind and the instinctive trust beneath them answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, the same four arcs the cross's own reversal, Gate 41 over Gate 31, also draws on however its two pairs are assigned to personality and design, and the same pair that underlies the Juxtaposition Cross of Influence and, reversed, the Juxtaposition Cross of Fantasy. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc.
