Right Angle Cross of Consciousness (5/35)

The Right Angle Cross of Consciousness is named for Gate 5 and Gate 35. Human Design reads Gate 5, from Hexagram 5, Waiting, sitting in the Sacral centre, as fixed rhythm, an inner timing that keeps eating, sleeping and working patterned; and Gate 35, from Hexagram 35, Progress, sitting in the Throat, as a hunger for progress and variety, the appetite for a feeling that only a new experience can supply. It belongs to the Right Angle family, the largest of the system's three, read as a personal destiny that answers mainly to the individual's own choices.

Its design half is Gate 64 and Gate 63, both seated in the Head. Gate 64 is read as confusion, unresolved images working themselves slowly toward a clarity that arrives on its own schedule; it pairs with Gate 47 in the channel of Abstraction. Gate 63 is read as doubt, the pressure to question and look for the flaw in a pattern before accepting it; it pairs with Gate 4 in the channel of Logic.

So a chart carrying this cross keeps a fixed pattern while hungering for the new on its surface, while beneath it an unresolved confusion presses against a doubting mind. The same personality pair, mirrored, also underlies the Left Angle Cross of Separation, and the full four gate set, roles exchanged, forms a further Cross of Consciousness. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping four of them into one personal cross is the modern system's own construction, dated to 1987.

The Right Angle Cross of Consciousness, in this ordering, is named for Gate 5 and Gate 35 rather than Gate 35 and Gate 5, the same four gates as its two related orderings with personality and design arranged differently in each. Its first article reads this arrangement as a fixed rhythm meeting a hunger for the new. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws on exactly the same four Quarters as both of its relations, one gate from each, for the third time.

Gate 5, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Gate 35, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Behind them, Gate 64 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding, and Gate 63 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind.

So the fixed rhythm and the hunger for progress the first article reads on this ordering's surface still draw on the arcs of transformation and form, while the confusion and the doubt beneath them still draw on the arcs of bonding and mind, the same four arcs its two relations draw on with the pairing and the roles rearranged. However this cross's four gates are named or paired, the wheel's own arithmetic supplies one gate from each of its four Quarters and no more.
