Long confused with lead and with tin, and recognised as distinct by Claude Francois Geoffroy in 1753. Its arrival, with antimony and zinc, is part of what broke the classical scheme of seven metals in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Bismuth was believed to be the heaviest stable element until 2003, when a team at Orsay detected alpha decay in bismuth-209 with a half-life of about 20 billion billion years, more than a billion times the age of the universe. It is the most diamagnetic of metals, it grows in brilliant iridescent stepped crystals, and it is the active ingredient of common stomach remedies.

Overview

Bismuth has been known since the late Middle Ages, but for centuries it was confused with lead, tin and antimony and not clearly recognised as a distinct metal until Claude-Francois Geoffroy demonstrated its separateness in 1753. The origin of the name is uncertain, most likely from the German Wismut, perhaps meaning white mass or from a mining term. Bismuth is a brittle, silvery metal with a faint pink cast, famous for the vivid iridescence of its oxidised crystals and, medicinally, as the active ingredient of some stomach remedies. Unusually for a heavy metal bismuth is relatively non-toxic, which suits it to stomach medicines, cosmetics and, increasingly, to lead-free solders, alloys and shot, while its low-melting alloys are used in fire-safety devices and its compounds as catalysts and pigments.

Bismuth held the title of heaviest stable element for decades, but in 2003 French physicists showed that its only naturally occurring isotope, bismuth-209, is in fact very weakly radioactive, decaying with a half-life more than a billion times the current age of the universe, a finding that quietly moved lead back into the position of the heaviest truly stable element without changing anything about how bismuth behaves in practice. The pink stomach remedy long sold as Pepto-Bismol takes its name directly from bismuth subsalicylate, its active ingredient since the product's introduction in the early twentieth century.

Alchemical and Symbolic Associations

Bismuth occupies an ambiguous place in the pre-modern tradition: it was worked and written about by Renaissance miners and metallurgists, appearing in the treatises of Georgius Agricola and in the writings associated with Paracelsus and Basil Valentine, yet it was never admitted to the classical scheme of the seven planetary metals, and its persistent confusion with lead, tin and antimony kept its identity unstable. Some later writers, extending the planetary correspondences beyond the original seven, tried to assign it a place, but no such association carries the authority of the ancient tradition, and the honest account is that bismuth sat at the disputed edge of alchemy rather than at its centre. Its lasting fascination is visual: the geometric, rainbow-hued hopper crystals of laboratory-grown bismuth are among the most beautiful forms any element takes.

Because bismuth is inexpensive, low-melting and far less toxic than most heavy metals, growing its iridescent hopper crystals at home has become a popular hobbyist and classroom demonstration, one of the few genuinely spectacular chemistry experiments that can be safely performed with a simple hot plate and a metal ladle, extending bismuth's ambiguous alchemical reputation into an entirely modern, entirely benign form of amateur experimentation.
