History of Religions

The history of religions is the comparative academic study of religious traditions across time and culture without confessional commitment, describing what a specific practice or belief is and how it developed rather than adjudicating whether it is true. The field gained its first standing international body in 1950, when the seventh International Congress for the History of Religions, held in Amsterdam, formally established the International Association for the History of Religions, giving scholars from different national traditions and confessional backgrounds a shared professional forum built specifically on comparative, non confessional method.

Comparing a practice, an initiation rite, a creation narrative, a purification ritual, across multiple traditions without treating any one tradition as the norm against which the others are measured is exactly the discipline's founding commitment, formalized at Amsterdam in 1950. The atlas is itself built on that same comparative premise, and the history of religions supplies both its documented case material and its methodological insistence that a practice be described in its own tradition's terms before it is set alongside another's.
