William Dwight Whitney's translation of the Atharva Veda is a critical scholarly rendering, published in the Harvard Oriental Series with the philological apparatus that series is built around, made directly from the Sanskrit rather than through an intermediate language or a secondhand paraphrase. That direct, annotated critical method, checkable against the Sanskrit text it translates, is the edition's real evidentiary basis rather than a claim resting on Harvard's name. Being an early-twentieth-century translation is why this atlas does not hold it as the sole current authority: later Vedic scholarship has refined specific readings Whitney could not have known. Use it for the wording of a specific Atharva Vedic hymn as this translation renders it; a claim resting on a contested modern reading needs a more current Vedic translation alongside it.
