Vijaya Nagarajan's Feeding a Thousand Souls, Women, Ritual, and Ecology in India, An Exploration of the Kolam, published by Oxford University Press in 2018, is a scholarly study of the kolam, the rice flour threshold designs drawn daily by women across Tamil Nadu, arguing the practice functions simultaneously as domestic ritual, aesthetic art and a small daily act of feeding ants and other creatures, an ecological gesture bound into the religious one.
