Vijaya Nagarajan's Feeding a Thousand Souls, Women, Ritual, and Ecology in India, An Exploration of the Kolam, published by Oxford University Press in 2018, is a scholarly study of the kolam, the rice flour threshold designs drawn daily by women across Tamil Nadu, arguing the practice functions simultaneously as domestic ritual, aesthetic art and a small daily act of feeding ants and other creatures, an ecological gesture bound into the religious one. Nagarajan draws on both extended fieldwork and her own upbringing within the tradition. Its strength is that combination of insider familiarity with the practice and an outside scholarly framework for analyzing it, letting the book take seriously a domestic women's practice long treated as too ordinary for serious study. Its limit is that it is grounded specifically in Tamil Nadu practice, so a claim about related threshold or floor drawing traditions in other regions of India needs a source on that region's own version of the practice.
