W. Montgomery Watt was a leading twentieth century scholar of early Islam, and this Clarendon Press book, the second volume of his influential two part biography, is his academic study of Muhammad's years in Medina, covering the formation of the early Muslim community and its political and military history. Its strength was, and to a real degree remains, the depth of Watt's engagement with the classical Arabic biographical and historical sources. Its limit is now its age: published in 1956, some of Watt's specific historical critical readings of the early sirah material have since been revised or challenged by later scholarship on early Islamic historiography, a caveat the source record itself carries, so a claim about the current scholarly consensus on a contested point is safer checked against a more recent study alongside Watt.
