The Hebrew Bible (Tanakh)

The Tanakh is the canonical collection of Hebrew scripture itself, the founding text of Judaism and, in different arrangement and translation, part of the Christian Old Testament. As the primary text it is rated at this atlas's top tier, meaning it is the direct and authoritative record of what the scripture itself says, not independent confirmation that any event or claim within it is historically accurate. Use it to establish what a passage actually says and where it appears; its historical accuracy, dating and composition are separate scholarly questions each needing their own dedicated source, and its religious meaning varies by tradition and translation in ways a single citation to the text cannot capture.
