Origin from 1905
Kutchi Jain traders settled in Zanzibar, a longstanding gateway between India and East Africa, built the Shri Zanzibar Katcchi Jain Temple in 1905 and consecrated murtis of Parsvanath, Shantinath and Mahaveerswami there, the first Jain images consecrated anywhere outside India. Zanzibar's own heritage documentation calls it, in its own hedged words, believed to be the first Jain temple outside India, a claim a second Jain institutional source corroborates without fixing a year of its own; this atlas carries that hedge rather than asserting the claim as settled.

How Jains Built the First Temple Outside India in Zanzibar
This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.
Kutchi Jain traders who had settled in Zanzibar, long a gateway between India and East Africa across the western Indian Ocean, built the Shri Zanzibar Katcchi Jain Temple in 1905 and consecrated murtis, sacred images, of Parsvanath, Shantinath and Mahaveerswami there, the first Jain images consecrated anywhere outside India by any community.
Zanzibar's own heritage documentation describes the temple, in its own hedged words, as believed to be the first Jain temple built outside India, a claim a second Jain institutional source corroborates without fixing a year of its own for any earlier temple elsewhere; this account carries that hedge exactly as its sources state it, rather than asserting the claim as settled beyond dispute where the record itself does not go that far.
What this changed for Jainism's spread was the planting of the tradition's ascetic and devotional life, murtis and all, on African soil for the first time anywhere the record documents. It arrived carried not by missionaries but by the same Kutchi trading community whose commercial ties across the Indian Ocean had already connected Zanzibar to India for generations before 1905, a trading relationship that had moved goods long before it ever moved consecrated images.
