Each entry describes what the discipline does, where it comes from and how it relates to its neighbours. Many categories in the Atlas are attached to a discipline, which is how a system's parts are held together.FactsLearn MoreAll DisciplinesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedContested: what scholarship calls Western esotericism was constituted as a field out of material earlier dismissed as rejected knowledge, and its boundaries were drawn around Europe - so they do not contain the Chinese and Indian systems this category also holds. 2OverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedFields of esoteric and divinatory practice defined by subject matter and method rather than by confession. Astrology, alchemy, divination and the arts of correspondence were pursued in Christian, Jewish, Muslim and pagan settings alike, and belong to no one tradition. 1Learn MoreEsoteric and Divinatory Fields of Practice This category treats the esoteric and divinatory disciplines as fields in their own right: Western and Chinese astrology, the I Ching, numerology, tarot, Kabbalah, alchemy, palmistry and the rest. Unlike a religion, a discipline belongs to no single faith (astrology and alchemy were practised across Christian, Muslim, Jewish and pagan settings alike), and is defined instead by its subject matter and method. Each entry describes what the discipline does, where it comes from, how it developed, and its relation to the neighbouring fields, giving the reader a way into the practice as a whole before meeting its individual terms elsewhere in the atlas.Practice, Not Verdict The atlas describes these disciplines as historical and cultural systems, what practitioners have believed and done, without ruling on whether their claims are true. Astrology, alchemy and divination have long and serious histories, deeply entwined with the development of astronomy, chemistry and philosophy, and are treated with that history in view rather than as mere superstition or as established fact. Because a discipline organises many of the other categories here: astrology gathers the planets, signs and houses, and alchemy the operations and stages. A discipline entry serves as a doorway into a whole cluster of related pages.All DisciplinesFilter Results118 entriesBelongs To TraditionAllAncient Egyptian Religion (4)Ancient Greek Religion (5)Aztec Religion (1)Bahá’í Faith (2)Bon (1)Buddhism (5)Candomblé (2)Cao Đài (1)Celtic Paganism (3)Chinese Folk Religion (7)Christianity (7)Confucianism (3)Gnosticism (4)Haitian Vodou (3)Heathenry (1)Hermeticism (6)Hinduism (7)Islam (8)Jainism (1)Judaism (9)Korean Muism (1)Luciferianism (2)Maya Religion (1)Mesopotamian Religion (4)Mithraism (2)Modern Satanism (2)Native American Religion (1)Neoplatonism (3)Norse Paganism (4)Polynesian Religion (1)Pythagoreanism (2)Roman Religion (2)Santería (Lucumí) (3)Shinto (3)Siberian Shamanism (1)Sikhism (1)Slavic Native Faith (Rodnovery) (1)Spiritism (1)Sámi Religion (1)Taoism (7)Tengrism (1)Thelema (3)Wicca (3)Yorùbá Religion (Ifá) (3)Zoroastrianism (3)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (7)Largely abandoned as a comparative category (2)Used, but its validity as a comparative category is disputed (30)Origin Period Start YearAll-1800 (4)-1200 (4)-1000 (3)-700 (2)-650 (1)-600 (2)-599 (1)-550 (1)-500 (2)-400 (5)-300 (5)-206 (1)-200 (8)-100 (8)150 (1)350 (1)750 (2)800 (2)900 (2)960 (1)966 (1)1100 (1)1150 (1)1227 (1)1440 (1)1450 (2)1486 (1)1499 (1)1570 (2)1577 (1)1580 (1)1582 (1)1600 (2)1650 (2)1770 (1)1774 (1)1781 (1)1790 (1)1810 (1)1845 (1)1848 (1)1850 (1)1854 (1)1856 (1)1860 (1)1870 (1)1871 (2)1882 (1)1887 (1)1888 (1)1890 (1)1893 (1)1902 (2)1913 (1)1917 (1)1922 (1)1930 (1)1937 (1)1939 (1)1949 (1)1968 (1)1969 (1)1970 (1)1976 (1)1987 (1)1990 (1)1999 (1)2002 (1)Founded ByAllFriedrich Max Muller (1)Isaac Luria (1)Mikao Usui (1)Ra Uru Hu (1)Richard Rudd (1)William Lilly (1)Branch OfAllKabbalah (1)Status TodayAllHistorical;
