The Gheranda Samhita is one of the three classical manuals of hatha yoga, alongside the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Shiva Samhita. It is framed as a dialogue in which the sage Gheranda teaches Chanda Kapali, and it sets out a sevenfold discipline: cleansing, strengthening, steadying, steadiness of mind, lightness, perception and isolation. The postures belong to the third of these, and the text describes thirty two of them, twice the number in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the largest count in any classical hatha manual. It states that Shiva taught eighty four, and that of the many millions of postures only these thirty two are of use in the world. The text does not call its discipline yoga of eight limbs; it calls it ghatastha yoga, the yoga of the vessel, meaning the body treated as a pot to be fired and made fit. Its date is not settled and the atlas does not assert one.

Seven Limbs, Not Eight

The text is explicit that it is not teaching the eight limbed yoga of the classical tradition, and the difference is structural rather than terminological. It sets out seven stages, beginning with cleansing procedures for the body, then hardening, then steadying, then the steadying of the mind, then lightness, then perception, then isolation, and it calls the whole thing the yoga of the vessel. The vessel is the body, understood as a pot that must be fired before it will hold anything. That image governs the arrangement. Purification comes first because an unfired pot leaks, and the postures belong to the third stage, as a means of making the body steady rather than as the discipline itself.

Nothing in the sequence corresponds to the ethical restraints and observances that open the classical eight limbed scheme, which is a substantive difference and not an omission. The framing is a teaching dialogue: a questioner asks and the sage answers, a form that lets the text present a complete curriculum in order without having to argue for any part of it. Read alongside the other classical hatha manuals, which cover much of the same ground in a different order and under a different scheme, it shows that the tradition contained more than one way of organising the same practices, and that the eight limbed model people reach for first is not the only one it had.

Thirty Two Postures Out of Millions

The posture count is the text's best known feature and its own justification for it is worth attending to. It states that Shiva taught eighty four postures and that of the very many postures existing in the world only thirty two are of use, which is both a claim to selectivity and an acknowledgement that the number is not fixed by anything. That is twice the count of the best known hatha manual and the largest in the classical corpus, and it is still a small fraction of what a modern class contains. The postures themselves are mostly seated or recumbent and are described briefly, in a line or two each, with the effect stated rather than the alignment.

A reader trying to reconstruct a shape from the description usually cannot do it without a commentary or a living teacher, which tells you what the text expected to accompany it. Its date is not settled. It is later than the fifteenth century manual whose material it presupposes, and beyond that the range proposed by scholars is wide, resting on manuscript evidence and on relationships with other texts rather than on anything the work says about itself. The atlas declines to assert a date and records the relative ordering instead, which is what the evidence actually supports, and leaves the narrower question to the manuscript scholarship that would have to answer it.
