Saints in Christian Art

Works of Christian art whose central subject is a canonized or venerated saint, portrayed individually, in a narrative scene from their own life or martyrdom, or gathered with other saints, rather than a scene from the Gospels or the Old Testament. Includes apostles and evangelists such as Simon, Philip, Jude, James the Greater, James the Less, Andrew, Bartholomew and Matthew, martyrs such as Barbara, Stephen, Cecilia, Sebastian and Perpetua and Felicity, monastic and mendicant founders such as Benedict, Dominic, Francis of Assisi and Ignatius of Loyola, doctors of the church such as Augustine, Ambrose, Jerome and Thomas Aquinas, and other venerated figures including Joan of Arc, Hildegard von Bingen and Mary Magdalene. A saint who is also a pope, such as Pius V, is filed under Popes and Church Leaders in Christian Art instead, since the pope's own leadership role is the more specific subject of those works.
