The Sun is the vital center of the horoscope, the core self, and the principle of conscious life. In myth it is Helios who drives the fire chariot across the sky, Apollo the god of light and reason, and Roman Sol Invictus, the unconquered source every other body borrows its light from. Astrologically it signifies identity, will, purpose, and the drive to shine and be seen; it is the hero at the center of the story. It rules the sign Leo and is exalted in Aries, in detriment in Aquarius, and in fall in Libra, so it burns brightest where courage and self-expression are welcome and dims where the group or the other comes first. Psychologically it is the ego in the healthy sense, the organizing I that integrates the whole chart. In the body it rules the heart, the spine, and the general vitality; in the week it governs Sunday; among metals it is incorruptible gold; and its colors are gold, orange, and radiant yellow.

The Sun as a Classical Planet

In the classical scheme the Sun is one of the seven planetai, the wandering stars, and is called a luminary rather than a planet proper, sharing that rank with the Moon. It rules Leo as its sole domicile and takes its exaltation in Aries, with the fall in Libra and detriment in Aquarius. Ptolemy gives it the nature of hot and dry, and it is the chief of the diurnal or day sect, the sect division being one of the strongest interpretive tools in Hellenistic practice: a planet of the same sect as the chart is judged more favourably than the same planet in a chart of the other sect. Its natural significations are the father in a day chart, the ruler or sovereign, authority, the eyes, the heart, gold, and the vital principle by which a thing is what it is. Its apparent motion through the twelve signs is what defines the tropical zodiac in the first place.

Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos gives an exact reason for each planet's elemental quality rather than simply asserting it, and for the Sun the text states that its heat is heating and, to a certain degree, drying, a formula built from the same four-quality physics, hot, cold, wet, dry, that runs through the whole of ancient medicine and natural philosophy, not a claim peculiar to astrology. The Sun's place among the seven planetai reaches the Hellenistic synthesis, dated to roughly the first century BCE through the second century CE in Greco-Roman Egypt, from a much older layer of Babylonian celestial omen-reading and horoscopy stretching back to perhaps 1000 BCE, in which the Sun's behaviour, eclipses above all, was read for the fate of kings and states centuries before the Greek apparatus of houses, aspects and personal nativities gave it the individual, chart-based meaning it carries today.

From Solar Deity to Solar Theology

The Sun has been an object of worship in a very large number of cultures, and the atlas records many of them separately: Shamash in Mesopotamia, judge and revealer of what is hidden; Ra and later Aten in Egypt; Surya and the twelve Adityas in India; Helios and Sol Invictus in the Greek and Roman worlds; Amaterasu in Japan, from whom the imperial line was traced; Inti in the Inca state cult. It does not follow that these are versions of one another, and the nineteenth-century tendency to reduce all mythology to solar allegory, associated with Max Muller and thoroughly criticised since, is an example of how badly that assumption can go wrong. What can be said is that the Sun is the most conspicuous object in the sky, that its annual movement governs agriculture everywhere, and that its symbolic weight, as source, as centre, as sovereign, as the light by which things are seen, recurs for those reasons rather than by diffusion from a single source.

One astronomical point cuts against the symbolism of the Sun as the regular measure of things. Its apparent motion along the ecliptic is not uniform. The Earth is nearest the Sun in early January and furthest in early July, so the Sun appears to move fastest in the northern winter and slowest in the northern summer, and the four seasons are of unequal length: about 92.8 days from the March equinox to the June solstice, 93.6 to the September equinox, 89.8 to the December solstice and 89.0 back to March. The sovereign of the sky keeps an uneven clock, and every calendar that divides the year into equal quarters is approximating.

Glyph and Origin

Its glyph is a circle with a central dot, an ancient sign for the solar disc. The Sun is one of the seven classical planets observed and personified as deities in Mesopotamia and codified as astrological bodies in the Hellenistic Greek world. The precise circumpunct shape used today is not the oldest attested form: Byzantine sources such as the twelfth-century astronomical compendium of Johannes Kamateros instead show the Sun as a plain circle with a single radiating line, closer to a child's drawing of a sunburst than to the dotted disc familiar from modern ephemerides. The enclosed dot appears to be a later refinement, generally dated to the Renaissance, and has been read as a schematic version of Apollo's golden shield with its central boss, though no ancient source confirms the reading and it remains conjecture rather than established fact.

Along with the other six classical planets, the Sun's sign entered the earliest version of computerised text encoding when Unicode fixed it, together with the full set of planetary and zodiacal glyphs, in the Miscellaneous Symbols block introduced in Unicode's original 1991 release, carrying a symbol with a documented history of well over a thousand years into ordinary digital typography.
