The Jiba is the exact spot inside Tenrikyo's main sanctuary at Tenri, Nara, held to be the place where humanity was conceived. It is marked by the Kanrodai, a wooden stand described by the founder, and the sanctuary is built facing inward on four sides around it so worshippers approach from every direction. Tenrikyo followers describe a pilgrimage there not as a visit but as a return, since the site is understood as the shared home of every human being.

Under the state controlled Shinto establishment of the pre-1945 period, Tenrikyo came under sustained government pressure to alter its teaching and practice so that it read as compatible with State Shinto, pressure the religion could only fully set aside once Japan's postwar constitution guaranteed religious freedom. The site's standing as the Jiba, the fixed point named in Tenrikyo's own account of humanity's origin, was affirmed rather than diminished once that pressure lifted. 1
History
Historical NoteSourced to the subject's own account
The Kanrodai the foundress described, a stepped stone pillar marking the Jiba itself, was never finished to the design she gave: Meiji era authorities halted its construction as a public order concern in the 1880s, and the stand standing there today remains at that incomplete stage by design rather than neglect, since Tenrikyo doctrine holds its completion belongs to the renewal of the world rather than to any builder in the present. 1
