It is distinct from Modern Hebrew, a separate interface style register revived as an everyday spoken language in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, though the two remain closely related and mutually legible to a trained reader. Biblical Hebrew remains the language of Jewish liturgical Torah and Tanakh reading today, chanted according to the same Masoretic markings in synagogues worldwide. The atlas holds it as the primary source language behind the Hebrew Bible material it catalogs.FactsLearn MoreBiblical HebrewConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesTake a Related QuizComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOriginsLanguage FamilyWell-attestedNorthwest Semitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family, closely related to Aramaic and Phoenician; the language of the great majority of the Hebrew Bible, composed roughly between the twelfth and second centuries BCE. 2Place of OriginWell-attestedBiblical Hebrew originated among the Israelite population of the ancient Levant, in the hill country and coastal plain of what is now Israel and the Palestinian territories. 2AttestationEra of AttestationWell-attestedBiblical Hebrew is attested from around the tenth century BCE, the Gezer Calendar being among its earliest surviving inscriptions. 3PracticeLiturgical and Scriptural RoleWell-attestedLanguage of the Torah and the Hebrew Bible as fixed in the Masoretic Text (7th-10th centuries CE); remains the required language of handwritten Torah scrolls and synagogue scriptural reading. 4IdentityNative ScriptWell-attestedWritten first in the Palaeo-Hebrew alphabet and then in the Aramaic-derived square script; the vowel points and cantillation marks were added by the Masoretes between the seventh and tenth centuries CE. 1Liturgical role (class)Well-attestedScriptural language 4Learn MoreBiblical Hebrew: The Language of the Hebrew Bible Biblical Hebrew is the specific ancient register of Hebrew in which the great majority of the Hebrew Bible, the Tanakh, was composed across roughly a millennium from the twelfth to the second centuries BCE, belonging to the Northwest Semitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family alongside Aramaic and Phoenician, with which it shares close grammatical and lexical kinship reflecting the Canaanite linguistic environment from which biblical Hebrew emerged. Biblical Hebrew itself shows internal historical development across the Bible's own composition period, distinguishable through vocabulary, grammar and even specific spelling conventions that allow scholars to date different biblical texts relative to one another with reasonable confidence, and the language ceased to function as a widely spoken vernacular sometime after the Babylonian exile of the sixth century BCE, when Aramaic became the everyday spoken language of most Jews even as Hebrew retained its unique scriptural and liturgical prestige. Modern Hebrew, revived as a spoken vernacular in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries chiefly through the efforts of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, draws its grammar and core vocabulary substantially from Biblical Hebrew even though the two differ meaningfully in everyday usage. The Masoretic Text and the Preservation of Biblical Hebrew Biblical Hebrew's original text was written without vowel markings, since ancient Hebrew script, like other Semitic abjads, recorded consonants only, leaving pronunciation to be preserved through oral tradition until the Masoretes, Jewish scholars working primarily in Tiberias between roughly the seventh and tenth centuries CE, developed a comprehensive system of vowel points and cantillation marks specifically to fix correct pronunciation and liturgical chanting of the biblical text with precision, producing the Masoretic Text that remains the authoritative Hebrew Bible text for Judaism today. Biblical Hebrew remains the required language of Torah scroll writing for synagogue use, copied by hand according to strict scribal rules by trained scribes called soferim, and Hebrew liturgical readings from the Torah and other biblical books remain central to synagogue worship, with the specific cantillation melodies, trope, associated with the Masoretic markings varying somewhat by community while all deriving from the same underlying Masoretic textual tradition established over a millennium ago. The Aleppo Codex and the Leningrad Codex, the two most important surviving Masoretic manuscripts, dated to the tenth and early eleventh centuries CE respectively, remain the primary textual basis for virtually all modern printed and critical editions of the Hebrew Bible used by scholars and religious communities alike.Biblical HebrewFilter Results18 entriesLiterary FormAllApocalypse (2)Chronicle (3)Commentary (1)Didactic narrative / novella (1)Epistle / letter (1)Hymn collection (1)Law code (4)Liturgical / prayer (1)Text collection / anthology (2)Wisdom literature (2)LanguageAllAramaic (2)Biblical Hebrew (18)Koine Greek (2)HistoricityAllHistorically attested (5)Historicity debated (1)Canonical StatusAllApocryphal (1)Canonical (3)Canonical (Tanakh) (3)Deuterocanonical (6)Non-canonical (13)Protocanonical (2)Pseudepigraphal (1)TraditionAllAnglican Communion (5)Anglicanism (5)Beta Israel (1)Breslov Hasidism (2)Calvinism (Reformed) (1)Chabad-Lubavitch (2)Church of Cyprus (6)Church of England (5)Church of Greece (6)Church of Ireland (5)Church of Sweden (2)Conservative Judaism (3)Eastern Orthodoxy (6)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (6)Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (2)Georgian Orthodox Church (6)Greek Orthodox Church (6)Haredi Judaism (2)Hasidic Judaism (2)Humanistic Judaism (2)Karaite Judaism (3)Lutheranism (2)Maronite Church (5)Methodism (1)Modern Orthodox Judaism (3)Old Believers (6)Orthodox Judaism (3)Reconstructionist Judaism (3)Reform Judaism (3)Roman Catholicism (5)Romanian Orthodox Church (6)Russian Orthodox Church (6)Serbian Orthodox Church (6)The Episcopal Church (5)Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (5)Ukrainian Orthodox Church (6)Attributed ToAllJeremiah (1)King David (1)Moses (2)Authored ByAllBaruch ben Neriah (1)Ben Sira (1)Excluded From CanonAllAnabaptism (7)Baptist (7)Calvinism (Reformed) (7)Church of Scotland (7)Church of Sweden (6)Dutch Reformed Church (7)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (6)Jehovah's Witnesses (7)Lutheranism (6)Pentecostalism (7)Presbyterianism (7)Protestantism (7)Quakerism (Religious Society of Friends) (7)Seventh-day Adventism (7)Canon divisionAllApocrypha (Scriptures and Texts) (1)Apocryphal Additions (1)Dead Sea Scrolls (Scriptures and Texts) (5)Jewish Scriptures (Scriptures and Texts) (3)Maccabean Literature (1)Pseudepigrapha (Scriptures and Texts) (2)Samaritan Scriptures (Scriptures and Texts) (1)Wisdom Literature (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 182 EsdrasBiblical HebrewBook of BaruchBiblical HebrewBook of JubileesBiblical HebrewBook of JudithBiblical HebrewBooks of the MaccabeesBiblical HebrewCommunity RuleBiblical HebrewHodayot (Thanksgiving Hymns)Biblical HebrewLetter of JeremiahBiblical HebrewMasoretic TextBiblical HebrewPesher Habakkuk (Habakkuk Commentary)Biblical HebrewPsalm 151Biblical HebrewSamaritan PentateuchBiblical HebrewTanakhBiblical HebrewTemple ScrollBiblical HebrewThe BibleBiblical HebrewTorahBiblical HebrewWar ScrollBiblical HebrewWisdom of SirachBiblical HebrewConnectionsShowing the first 400 of 472 connections.Attested in RegionThe Levant, Regions Well-attested Biblical Hebrew is documented in use as a written language in The Levant.
