M.L. West was a leading classicist and Indo-Europeanist, and this is his scholarly translation of the Gathas, the oldest Zoroastrian hymns, including the Ahuna Vairya and Ashem Vohu, made directly from the Avestan text. This record states an honest scholarly limit rather than a false confidence: West's own translation carries a stated acknowledgment of how uncertain the rendering of Gathic Avestan actually remains, a genuinely difficult and disputed ancient language, so specific wording choices reflect scholarly judgment under real uncertainty rather than settled fact.
