South Asia

India, officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia, bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast, and sharing land borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Settled life emerged on the western margins of the Indus river basin about nine thousand years ago and grew into the Indus Valley Civilisation of the third millennium BCE. By about 1200 BCE an archaic form of Sanskrit had spread into India from the northwest, and its earliest hymns contain elements of what would become Hinduism, while after 500 BCE Buddhism and Jainism arose beside a hardening caste based social order. Traditions, texts, sacred places and orders in this atlas are placed here when they arose in or belong to the country.
