Brahmi

Brahmic Script Family

Origin Attested from at least the third century BCE, notably in the Edicts of Ashoka, and is the ancestor of most scripts used across South and Southeast Asia.

The ancestral script of India, first securely attested in the rock and pillar edicts of the emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE, many of which commend the Buddhist dharma. Its decipherment by James Prinsep in 1837 reopened much of ancient Indian history. Brahmi is the parent of nearly every script of South and Southeast Asia, from Devanagari and Tamil to Burmese, Thai and Khmer, and of Tibetan beyond the Himalaya. Whether it was adapted from a Semitic script or was an indigenous invention remains a genuinely open scholarly debate.

Ashoka's Letters and Their Decipherment

Brahmi appears in the historical record fully formed, in the edicts that the Mauryan emperor Ashoka had carved on rocks and polished pillars across India in the third century BCE. In those inscriptions the emperor, remorseful after the bloody conquest of Kalinga, commends dhamma, moral law shaped by his Buddhist conviction, to his subjects, which makes the oldest securely read Indian script also a religious monument from its first appearance. Knowledge of Brahmi was lost in India itself as the script evolved beyond recognition, and for centuries the edicts stood unreadable.

The key was recovered in 1837 by James Prinsep, an official of the Calcutta mint, who worked from bilingual coins and careful comparison of letterforms until the ancient inscriptions opened, restoring Ashoka to history and with him a great part of early Indian chronology. Where Brahmi itself came from remains genuinely contested: many scholars derive it from an Aramaic or other Semitic model transmitted through trade and administration, others argue for indigenous development, possibly with some memory of the still undeciphered Indus signs, and the question is treated as open in the standard literature. What is not contested is its design: a consonant-plus-inherent-vowel system, the abugida, that became the template for a whole civilisation's writing.

Parent of a Hundred Scripts

Brahmi's descendants form one of the largest script families on earth. In the north its letters evolved through Gupta and Siddhamatrka forms into Devanagari, Bengali, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Odia and Tibetan; in the south into Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Sinhala; and beyond the sea, carried by traders and Buddhist and Hindu teachers, into the Mon, Burmese, Khmer, Thai, Lao, Javanese and Balinese scripts of Southeast Asia. Nearly every one of these serves a scriptural tradition: Pali Buddhist texts are written in Sinhala, Burmese, Thai and Khmer letters, Sanskrit in Devanagari and Ranjana, the Sikh scriptures in Gurmukhi, the Tibetan canon in a script modelled on Brahmi's Gupta stage. The family resemblance is structural: all keep the inherent vowel, the attached vowel signs and the systematic phonetic ordering of the alphabet, an ordering already fixed in ancient India by grammarians and itself a small monument of linguistic science.

Through the Ashokan edicts Brahmi is also tied to the earliest physical evidence of Buddhism, and inscriptions in it at Sanchi, Bharhut and the early cave monasteries record the donations of monks, nuns and lay devotees, the oldest written voices of the Buddhist community. A script known from stone for barely two centuries of active use thus stands behind the daily writing of well over a billion people.
