In myth she is Selene crossing the night sky, Artemis the wild huntress, and Roman Luna, the ever-changing goddess whose phases measure time. Fastest of the seven traditional lights, she reflects the Sun rather than shining of her own, and so she signifies how we respond, feel, and are fed rather than how we choose. She rules the sign Cancer and is exalted in Taurus, in detriment in Capricorn, and in fall in Scorpio, at ease where feeling and security are honored and strained where control or intensity rules. Psychologically she is the unconscious, the mother, the child within, and the felt sense of belonging. In the body she rules the stomach, breasts, and bodily fluids and tides; she governs Monday; her metal is silver; and her colors are white, silver, and pale sea-tones.

The Moon as a Classical Planet

The Moon is the second luminary, ruling Cancer as its sole domicile, exalted in Taurus, in fall in Scorpio and in detriment in Capricorn. Ptolemy gives it a moist nature, and it is the chief of the nocturnal sect. Because it moves fastest of all the bodies, roughly thirteen degrees a day, it is the principal timekeeper of the classical system: it carries the applying and separating aspects on which horary judgment turns, and its position relative to the Sun defines the phases, which the tradition reads as a cycle of increase and decrease. Its natural significations are the mother in a night chart, the body, the common people, the household, liquids, and everything that changes, receives and reflects. In medical astrology it governs the humours and the flow of fluids, and in electional practice the phase of the Moon is one of the first things considered.

Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos explains the Moon's assigned quality on physical rather than merely traditional grounds, stating that she is chiefly humidifying because she stands nearest the earth and to the moist exhalations that rise from it, the same four-quality framework of hot, cold, wet and dry that classical medicine used to describe bodies and temperaments generally. That reasoning belongs to the Hellenistic synthesis of roughly the first century BCE to the second century CE in Greco-Roman Egypt, but the Moon's astrological importance is far older, rooted in Babylonian celestial omen-reading and horoscopy reaching back to perhaps 1000 BCE, where her monthly appearance, disappearance and eclipses were tracked for omens concerning the state long before Hellenistic astrology built the personal, chart-based system of phases and aspects now used to read an individual nativity.

Lunar Calendars and Lunar Deities

The synodic month of about twenty-nine and a half days is the basis of the lunar and lunisolar calendars used across the world, and the atlas records several: the Hebrew, Islamic, Hindu and Chinese systems each solve differently the problem that twelve lunar months fall about eleven days short of the solar year. The Islamic calendar simply lets the year drift; the Hebrew and Chinese insert intercalary months; the Hindu system does both in different regional forms. Lunar deities are as widespread as solar ones and are as often male as female, which is worth stating because the modern popular association of the Moon with the feminine is a generalisation that the historical record does not support: Sin and Nanna in Mesopotamia, Thoth and Khonsu in Egypt, Chandra and Soma in India, and Tsukuyomi in Japan are all male, while Selene, Luna, Artemis-Diana and Chang-e are female.

Two different months lie behind those calendars and confusing them is the commonest error in reading a lunar date. The synodic month, 29.53 days, is phase to phase, new moon to new moon, and it is what a lunar calendar counts. The sidereal month, 27.32 days, is the Moon's return to the same star, and it is what a nakshatra or mansion scheme counts. The difference of just over two days is the Sun's own movement during the month, which the Moon has to make up. The eleven day shortfall against the solar year resolves neatly at nineteen years: 235 synodic months come to within about two hours of 19 tropical years, the Metonic cycle, and it is that near coincidence the Hebrew and Chinese intercalation schemes exploit.

Glyph and Origin

Its glyph is a crescent. The Moon is one of the seven classical planets, watched and deified in ancient Mesopotamia and absorbed into Hellenistic astrology as a foundational body. As with the Sun's pairing to gold, alchemy assigned the Moon its own metal, silver, and the association is old enough to have left a mark on ordinary language: the Latin name for the Moon's day, dies Lunae, gives English Monday and the corresponding day in every Romance language, a naming pattern inherited from the same seven-day planetary week that fixed the classical glyphs in the first place.

The crescent sign travelled into modern computing with the rest of the classical set when Unicode encoded it in the Miscellaneous Symbols block in 1991, and it remains one of the few astrological glyphs whose modern printed form is essentially unchanged from its late antique original, unlike the Sun's circumpunct or Mercury's staff, both of which show real evolution across the Byzantine and medieval periods before settling into their present shapes. That stability may also owe something to necessity: because the Moon moves so quickly through the zodiac compared with the other classical bodies, its sign appears far more often in any working chart or ephemeris than most of its neighbours, and a mark that is drawn constantly has less room to drift than one consulted only rarely.
