Jeremiah

Prophets

Jeremiah, who lived from about 650 to about 570 BC and is also called Jeremias, was one of the major prophets of the Hebrew Bible. According to Jewish tradition he authored the book that bears his name, the Books of Kings and the Book of Lamentations, working with the assistance and under the editorship of Baruch ben Neriah, his scribe and disciple. The Book of Jeremiah presents him as a significant figure in the Kingdom of Judah in the late seventh and early sixth centuries BC, born into a priestly lineage and reluctant to accept his call to prophecy. This entry records the traditional authorship claims.

The fact that the sixth chapter of Baruch bears the title, "The Epistle of Jeremiah", has been, and is still in the eyes of many, a decisive reason for holding the time-honoured view that the great prophet is its author.
