The 2012 Phenomenon: New Age Appropriation of an Ancient Mayan Calendar

Robert K. Sitler's peer reviewed journal article was the first academic assessment of the 2012 movement, examining directly how Jose Arguelles's own writing was taken up and reworked by the wider New Age movement into a claim about a 2012 calendar ending, a specific, documented case of appropriation rather than a general history of Maya calendrics. It was added because the existing sources on Arguelles held him only at lower tiers, the tradition's own account of itself, with no outside academic assessment of the phenomenon around him. Use it for the documented New Age appropriation of the Maya calendar and Arguelles's specific role in it; it is not a source on traditional Maya calendrics themselves.

Peer-reviewed article, the first academic assessment of the 2012 movement, and the standard scholarly treatment of Jose Arguelles and the New Age appropriation of the Maya calendar. Added by the mesoamerican properties wave because the corpus held Arguelles only at Tier 2 and Tier 3.
